Joe O'Callaghan
Clinical Director
Joe is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Connecticut and New York, and seasoned therapist with over 35 years of experience working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. For 30 years he served in Stamford, CT Public Schools as Department Chair for Social Work, where he supervised 50 clinicians and led the development of a trauma-informed mental health system of care. During this time he also taught clinical practice as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at NYU’s Silver School of Social Work, provided clinical supervision and mentorship to other therapists, and maintained a private psychotherapy practice. In addition to his work as a therapist Joe worked in ministry, with a focus on youth, men’s spirituality, and retreat leadership.
Joe’s clinical work is grounded in Psychodynamic and Family Systems theories. He is trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Prolonged Grief Therapy, and Narrative Approaches to therapy, and practices the integration of meaning-making and spirituality, particularly in the context of grief, trauma, and life transitions. Joe has a Master’s degree in Social Work from Fordham University, a post-master’s certificate in Spirituality and Clinical Practice from Smith College, and he often incorporates insights from the contemplative practices into his therapeutic approach.
In his work with clients Joe helps those who are navigating loss, depression, anxiety, and major life changes, helping them find balance and purpose. Joe’s guiding belief in his work is that the healing relationship between client and therapist is the foundation for meaningful and lasting change.
Joe enjoys spending time with his wife of 34 years, Daniela and their three adult children. Joe is also a poet, loves the outdoors, traveling, hiking and kayaking.
It is in the space between us that healing happens. There is a hidden wholeness at the heart of the therapeutic relationship that allows for growth and change.
